MDONS Dinner Meeting

MDONS Election Time

This year we are selecting a new secretary and it is time to vote for new candidates for this office.  I am excited to present two candidates to you: Donna Heim Paul and Barbara Wenger.  Both candidates meet the qualifications for office.  Please read their biographies and vote for one.

Please respond with your vote to Jamie.LeLazar@gmail.com by Friday, November 27, 2007.

In the e-mail, please state your name, and the name of one candidate for the office of secretary.  Alternatively, you may write-in a candidate for the office.  This will accommodate member verification and prevent accidental duplicate balloting.   Thank you very much for your participation.

******************************************Candidates for Secretary *****************************************

Donna Heim Paul RN BSN      My name is Donna Heim Paul. I stepped into the interim secretary position when it was vacated late this summer 2009. It is the responsibility of the secretary to transmit information to the membership of the local chapter, MDONS. The communication to the membership comes via the local president. The secretary is responsible for maintaining the minutes of board meetings, providing copies of minutes to the board, sending out announcements for educational events, and keeping updated information on the gmail account. Bringing the email membership up to date and virus free has been the biggest challenge thus far. I would enjoy keeping this position as secretary to create a positive flow in the communication patterns for the membership. Continuity is always important. I was an Associate degree nurse for over 20 years, finished my BSN in 2007, and started working on my MSN degree right after that. I have taken some months off to catch up with life. I have been a nurse for over 30 years, floated to the oncology floor at UCH for many years, started as the outpatient clinic nurse for Hem/Onc at Denver Health 8 years ago. I became more intensely interested at that time. I started attending Congress and Institutes of Learning to increase my knowledge base. I began to get involved with ONS at the National Level. I was selected for the Leadership Development Institute several years ago, won a scholarship to Congress, won a scholarship to the Research Nursing Symposium held by ONS, was nominated and selected for the co-editor position with the Transcultural Nursing SIG newsletter. I am very involved with the TNI SIG. I have been selected to run for the co-ordinator position of the TNI SIG by the ONS nominating committee. I have served on two national ONS project teams, one is the team that created the Cultural Diversity Toolkit, now published and gearing up for revisions. I served on the Oral Chemotherapy Project team but withdrew when my daughter passed away. I enjoy working with diverse groups, and the networking that I have found through local and national levels of ONS has contributed to advancing my network of friends and colleagues, these people play a very important part in my nursing and personal life. I plan to continue to serve locally and nationally in whatever capacity I am chosen for, these opportunities improve the quality of care that I provide for my underinsured and uninsured patients at Denver Health in the outpatient clinic setting ande add to the knowledge base that is required in the ever changing work of Oncology. I appreciate this opportunity to continue to be your MDONS secretary.

Barbara Wenger RN, MS, CNS, OCN The  ONS mission and vision of the secretary position is to promote excellence in oncology nursing and quality cancer care; have knowledge of current issues, trends, education and research; have strong organization and collaborative skills; communicate effectively orally, written and formally; and project a dynamic image of nursing in representing ONS. The following depicts some examples of my qualifications for some of these requirements.  EDUCATION: I graduated with my BSN from Kent State University over 20 years ago and have been practicing oncology nursing for most of my career.  Five years of that time included travel nursing for approximately 3-6 month assignments around the United States working at various oncology facilities.  I arrived in Denver in 1992 and started my employment at University of Colorado Hospital the following year.  I have worked at UCH for the last 17 years in various roles as a Clinical Nurse, Charge Nurse, Case Manager and most recently the Clinical Nurse Educator/ Specialist on the Oncology/ Bone Marrow Transplant inpatient unit. I have been a member of multiple committees over the years including the role of co chairman of the Vascular Access Committee for the past few years.  Four years ago I enrolled in the CNS program at the University of Colorado Denver and graduated with my CNS degree in Palliative Care this past spring.  PROFESSIONAL AFFILIATIONS: I joined the Oncology Nursing Society in 1999 and have been a member of MDONS since 2003.   I have attended multiple local monthly dinner meetings and annual Congress sessions in various cities.  I have been an active member of MDONS by serving on the Fall Conference committee and as a programs chairman. As a programs chairman with my colleague, we planned monthly dinner meetings including coordinating speakers, venues, and continuing education for a two year term.  In addition to this position, I served as a board member of MDONS during that time frame. As a commitment to professional nursing and with my present position at UCH, I have also become affiliated with the following organizations: Infusion Nurses Society, National Nursing Staff Development Organization, National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists and Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society.  ACADEMIC CLINICAL PRESENTATIONS: I have been a trainer for the ONS Chemotherapy/ Biotherapy course and help to present this course with my colleagues three times per year.  I recently attended the session at Congress this spring to also become a trainer for the new Treatment Basics Course: Antineoplastics in the Non Oncology Setting.  My present position includes assisting in coordinating unit orientation of other nurses, organizing multiple educational programs, and providing educational information and training for staff regarding new procedures/ equipment.  I’ve had the privilege of serving on the board and programs committee in the past and enjoyed that opportunity immensely.  It gave me the chance to gain insight into local and regional cancer concerns, improve my advocacy and stewardship skills, and network with local members. I would be honored to be able to run for the position of secretary and represent our organization again.

LifeSpark is coming to MDONS

Reiki Therapy Session

LifeSpark Cancer Resources is a non-profit volunteer service organization focused on the use of energy therapies to provide support and care for individuals with cancer. LifeSpark is dedicated to serving individuals and the oncology medical community through education, training, advocacy and delivery of hands-on sessions.  LifeSpark provides Reiki and Healing Touch as supportive care that improves physical comfort and well-being for individuals with cancer. Through the Energy Partners program, participants are matched with providers for weekly energy therapy sessions.

Energy therapies are holistic, supporting body, mind, and spirit. They complement traditional medical care. For cancer patients, sessions can help reduce fatigue, sleeplessness, anxiety, and nausea. Participants often report improved mental clarity and a sense of peace and well-being.

Look for LifeSpark Reiki providers at MDONS dinner programs beginning in April, and also at the Fall Conference in October.  Take advantage of a free mini Reiki session before the dinner meetings to help release your stress and clear your mind after a busy day at work.
